Detail
The Bovine Gastric Magnet is a veterinary medical device used to treat and prevent diseases of bovine hardware. These magnets are placed in the stomachs of cattle, especially dairy cows, to attract and immobilize metallic foreign bodies in the rumen and prevent them from causing damage. Cattle stomach magnets are typically made of neodymium-iron-boron magnets or ferrite (ceramic) magnets and can take the shape of a smooth bar or a ring design. Newer designs include cage designs and more powerful arrays of rare earth magnets.
Hardware disease is a common disease in cattle, usually caused by ingestion of sharp metal objects. These metal objects can be deposited in the cow's reticulation, irritating or penetrating the lining and causing infection or other serious problems. Cows that are unable to differentiate between materials while eating may swallow pieces of metal, such as nails and wires, and these objects become lodged in the honeycomb-like walls of the reticular tissue, threatening the surrounding vital organs.
A bovine stomach magnet is used by inserting it into the cow's mouth and then allowing it to enter the cow's second stomach (the reticulum). The magnet will attract and hold stray metal objects there, preventing them from moving and causing damage. Typically, these magnets are effective in preventing hardware disease when used only once in a cow's lifetime.
